The company would soon be ready to unveil a lithium-ion battery whose production cost would be drastically lowered.
The marketing of the new Tesla Roadster has just been postponed and the company is unlikely to announce new models this year. But the future brightens all the same. According to Reuters reports , Elon Musk’s company is preparing a big surprise for its “Battery Day”. Tesla should indeed unveil a new battery, announced with a lifespan of 1.6 million kilometres, but above all cheaper. This could make the Model 3 more affordable.
Elon Musk had been suggesting for several months that great strides were near in the field of battery technology. Among the new batteries designed by Tesla in collaboration with a Chinese company, one would use only 20% of cobalt and another would use a chemistry of the lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) type. The use of chemical additives and other components would also reduce the internal stress suffered by the battery during charge and discharge cycles. Economically, the low dependence on cobalt would drastically reduce the cost of batteries. Very concretely, this would put the cost of an electric car in a similar price range to that of gasoline cars.
After its “Gigafactory” in the United States, Tesla announces its desire to build a “Terafactory”, 30 times larger and highly automated, which would also reduce costs considerably. Tesla’s “Battery Day” does not yet have an official date, but it should normally take place by the end of the month. For its part, the company’s new battery will be sold in China by the end of the year or at the beginning of 2021. Ultimately, the technology should then be offered to other international markets.
