Depression is not something to take lightly and the sooner you address it, the higher your chances are of feeling better, we understand where this question is coming from because quite frankly the life of an entrepreneur is filled with work hours and worries, it rarely leaves time for anything else and even when you get the chance to do something else your business struggles to keep finding a way to crawl into your mind.
Running a business or a startup is a complete roller coaster, you either have the best day ever and feel like you could take over the world or you’re hitting rock bottom overwhelmed by problems and regrets for not pursuing a more traditional path in life, that’s why business owners are at higher risk for mental health issues and loneliness is a slippery slope, what works for us is putting together a support system that’s there to take care of you
This system is comprised of the things you do apart from work and the people you surround yourself with, here are three steps you can take towards improving your situation:
1. Go outside more
This involves both work and free time, we spend so much time in front of the screen that we forget about life.
The beautiful thing about entrepreneurship is you are your own boss and although you end up working more hours than an average employee, you still have the freedom to adjust your schedule to whatever you need, work from a coffee shop, go to conferences and events or check out a co-working space in your area.
Co-working spaces were designed especially for this purpose, people working together in the same place
Do not neglect the power that nature can have over you, so take the time to appreciate it, you’ll find it has the power to calm your mind and you can look at things differently.
Probably the easiest way to start improving on this front is by getting yourself a gym membership stick to a gym schedule and you’ll start to see improvements in your overall mood and mindset got more on this in step 2
2. Health is your secret weapon
The healthier you are, the better regulated the chemistry in your body is, the feelings of depression or loneliness can be minimized if your general health starts to improve.
Studies show that fitness improves concentration and enhances creativity essential attributes of a great entrepreneur, there are three important aspects of health which you need to consider:
2.1. Your physical body which you improve by exercising
Running is free and accessible and offers the perfect combo of introspection and physical activity, everything you do in the gym allows your body to improve itself and release tension
And just remember a good night’s sleep is sometimes a lot more valuable than an extra hour of work you put in in which you get nothing done.
2.2. The fuel you put into your body
Stop with the energy drinks and chips and donuts, if you start eating better your body will be happier and so will you adding the right fuel makes all the difference
2.3. The social aspect
We are not meant to live and be alone, we’re social animals, you can bring the social element to both food and workouts, eat with people and work out with people, you’ll find a massive difference in outcome just from this small shift.
3. Make time to be there in person
Either we’re talking about visiting your parents, playing with the dog or meeting old friends for a couple of drinks or coffee is enough to offset the tremendous workload, we put on ourselves as entrepreneurs, these tiny moments of disconnect work wonders on your psyche, when’s the last time you took a walk with someone who’s in your inner circle and just talked about things.
Maybe it’s time to change that, the change will not happen instantly, but if you start putting these three steps into action you’ll soon realize your life is improving and the gap between the moments of loneliness is starting to widen, strive for progress, not perfection
Our advice is to be open about what you’re going through and talk about it with the people in your inner circle, the ones who you trust the most and if you feel like it you can take control of this, seek out a professional it’s a small investment to make in what is going to be a long and fulfilling life
